11TH Grade honors chemistry class visited Sanovva Analytical Lab on Feb 18th.

Students had an opportunity to observe different mass spectrometers for solid, liquid, and gas samples. Students also attended the chromatograph, viscometer, plasma samples, and more.

During the lab tour, students learned (1) chemical analysis used to measure the mass-to-charge ratio (m/z) of atoms and/or molecules in a sample, (2) to distinguish between different isotopes of the same element using the mass spec and (3) depending upon the type of mass spectrometer, these measurements can often be used to determine the exact molecular weight of the sample components and to identify unknown compounds.
