Thomas Edison EnergySmart Charter School Hosts NASA Astronaut Dr. Gregory Linteris

SOMERSET, NJ – Students at Thomas Edison EnergySmart Charter School (TEECS) participated in a space-focused educational event featuring guest speakers, a Science National Honor Society presentation, and a live NASA TV downlink with an astronaut aboard the International Space Station, according to a social media post by the school.

The event included a visit from New Jersey native astronaut Dr. Gregory Linteris. Linteris, who flew on two space shuttle missions, spoke to kindergarten through fourth-grade students about space exploration and answered questions. He discussed his experiences in orbit and the role of science and technology in space travel.

Linteris also touched on the value of pursuing new experiences and perspectives, even when the path is not clearly defined, to find fulfillment.

Following the visit, the school hosted a Science National Honor Society presentation recognizing student achievements in STEM fields.

The event also featured a NASA TV downlink, during which astronaut Nick Hague, aboard the International Space Station, answered pre-recorded questions from students live from space. According to school officials, thousands of viewers tuned in to watch the exchange, though time constraints prevented all submitted questions from being addressed.

New Jersey state Sen. Andrew Zwicker delivered remarks emphasizing the importance of STEM education. Dr. Oya Tukel, dean of FinTech at the New Jersey Institute of Technology, also highlighted the role of innovation and technology in education and career development.

School officials said the event was intended to engage students in STEM subjects and provide insight into space exploration.
