Hydroponics (growing plants without soil, only water) at TEECS

The Environmental Alliance Club at TEECS is currently gardening indoors and outdoors. In the Middle and High School wing, there is a large white hydroponic system, a farm stand. This system was gifted to TEECS through the Green Team’s efforts with the Whole Kids Garden Grant. Hydroponics is a method of growing and nurturing editable plants with a nutrient-rich basin of water that supports the roots of the plants without the use of soil. One of the benefits of using hydroponics rather than outdoor gardening is that the plants can grow all year long!
The maintenance requires refilling the water basin less often than outdoor plants, monitoring and testing the pH (acidity) levels of the water, and occasionally replenishing the aqueous nutrients. Currently, we are growing swiss chard, romaine lettuce, arugula, kale, parsley, broccoli raab, lettuce and mixed greens.
These plants will produce salad items that will be used in our school cafeteria for student meals. The EAC is run by Mrs. Jignasha Patel and assisted by Mrs. Julissa Suarez. In the photos, you will see Mrs. Suarez and the 7th grade members of EAC performing upkeep to the plants.
